This - My Soul Meeting CD, is my first album that I made together with wonderful friends. I hope you will enjoy. 01 No Fool No Fun It is said jazz musicians all have their own blues. This is my original blues if being asked. This title is like a motto of my life. For the purpose of enjoying from the heart I have to be foolish (baka). 02 Little Girl Blue This song was originally composed for the Broadway Musical (JUMBO) in 1935, and had been sung by many jazz artists such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, Doris Day, Janis Joplin and the Carpenters. This song features a wonderful arrangement by pianist, Mr. Takubo and Yamada's brilliant 'brush work'. 03 Caravan song by Duke Ellington. I arranged it by changing the tempo and rhythm of the original music. I have respect for the original traditional music but it also important to search for new sounds for the modern world. 04 On a Rainy Day Because I am a bassist, when it rains, I feel depressed as I take my instrument out. I thought if I write music for the rain I would feel better when it rains. On a rainy day, I drove home and stopped in front of my house, and started writing music in the car. It went smoothly, and this is the song. In a good mood, I wanted to drive again, but then I found a parking fine on my car. 05 Dawn-The Courtain is Rising (Opening) This song starts with bass arco introduction and ends with a magnificent drum solo. It was a song I wrote quite a while ago. I have not played it in the trio, but I thought it would fit for the first album and I revived it. I hope you will enjoy the lyrical piano solos with rapid minor and major chord changes and a 3 minute drum solo. 06 Mingus Stroll Although I have been influenced by many bassists, Charles Mingus is one of the artists who still inspires me even now. Though I have not met Mingus, it is a lot of fun to imagine his character and personality through his music. I composed this song imagining Mingus with his big body shaking as he is walking. 07 Metro Maniac Tokyo is a metropole with really a lot of people. One day when I was on the way home on a crowded train, I was threatened by a drunk man because I brought such a big instrument inside the crowded train. I was used to receiving cold gazes. The drunk man criticized me for having a huge instrument on a train. I apologized few times, but unfortunately our destinations were the same. In the end, the man became violent and kicked the contrabass and the instrument was damaged. While I had the instrument in for repair, I could not practice and all I could do was to write this sorrowful piece. This Metro song is just about that Tokyo metro. 08 Luiza Speaking of Jobim, a Brazilian composer of the 20th century, who left countless masterpieces including Girl of Ipanema. After all, naming the airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after Antonio Carlos Jobim demonstrates the respect for his achievements. This song, Luisa is nothing but a song like Bossa Nova. It is a luscious melodic ballad that he wrote for his daughter. I remember very well when I heard it for the first time how beautiful the melody was. Playing such a melody with arco has also been a great challenge for me. I hope you will feel a reflection of the entire album with this song.
